About

Mansfield Park was Jane Austen's third book, published in the Spring of 1814. It follows the story of Fanny, a young girl who was sent to live with her aunt and uncle at the age of ten. While Mansfield Park still follows the basic foundation of Austen's work, the story of a young woman trying to navigate society and social order, the book examines complex themes such as religion, abuse, and the presence of sexuality. Furthermore, unlike the rest of Austen's work, the love story at the core of Mansfield Park is highly controversial and often hated. Fanny's main love interest throughout the book is Edmund, her much older cousin. Unlike other works by Austen, there is no epic love declaration that seals the happy ending for the couple and only the presence of a paragraph in which Edmund reasons that Fanny may be a suitable wife. When it came to this instance, the directors of the adaption took creative liberty and changed both the dialogue and storyline to be more in tune with the rest of Austen's work.
