About

Jacqueline Coleman. Detail of Monkey in the Jungle, 2022. Colored pencil on paper. 11 x 14 in. Courtesy of David Cutrell.

A vivid and bright multicolored monkey poses on all four legs. The jungle around it is filled with vibrant greens, yellows and blues –trees, plants, and vines, various types of grass. Nearby, two water falls lead to a small creek. The monkey takes up most of the composition. Its body is decorated with alternating ‘jig jag’ patterns, almost tribal. The patterns are made up of hollow and solid triangles of varying sizes. The body faces the left of the drawing, which is perhaps its intended destination, while its face and wide open eyes turn squarely to the viewer.
