Family connections were not uncommon throughout the factory at Vauxhall Motors. As one of the town’s largest employers, it attracted generations of workers, many joining straight from school. The company fostered a strong sense of community, actively encouraging employees to recommend relatives for vacancies. At one stage, applicants were even asked to note existing family ties on apprenticeship applications, which were viewed favourably. Long service was common, and in some cases multiple generations of the same family worked at the plant, collectively spanning much of the plants history. (88)
