Unions

Vauxhall was a closed shop, meaning employees were required to join a union. In its earlier years, the factory experienced few strikes and was often nicknamed "the turnip patch" in the industry. Union representatives, convenors, and shop stewards, all elected by the workforce, worked across the plants to act as a link between employees and management. They helped secure fair pay, improved working conditions and hours, negotiated pensions, and offered support during challenging times such as closures.
