About

The Gorge was formed during the ice-age (between 350 and 650 million years ago) when enormous glaciers blocked the original route of the River Avon - from Bristol, through Ashton Vale, to Weston Super Mare. Instead, the ice formations forced melting water to find an alternate route to the sea. The water gradually cut a route directly west through soft carboniferous limestone rocks to form the Avon Gorge as we know it today.
