Story Shop is an Oral History project capturing living memories of Oswestry’s Town, High Street and rural areas. With a local team of Oral History Society trained volunteers, these stories record different people and differentgenerations.
As our high streets continue to shift with new trends, the cost of living, online shopping and changing communities, Story Shop looks to gather a selection of stories of how Oswestry’s market town has changed in its identity, function, and use. These oral histories will be permanently archived in the Shropshire Archives as a record for present and future generations.
In this audio exhibition, ‘The Story So Far...’, we have selected clips and placed them in different categories. The selection captures the living memories of people who were interviewed aged between 40-95 years and live in Oswestry. The stories reflect their experience of the urban and rural environment.
Stories have been taken from memories of railways and hospitals, and from farming to markets. The clips reflect the adaptability and ‘quirky’ identity of this market town, its inhabitants and its unique position on the Welsh-English border.
We are still collecting oral histories throughout the autumn of 2024 from people aged 18-40 years. If you are interested in having your story recorded please leave your name and contact details via the QR Code displayed.
